Itai and Dana Rami
“At 5:30 in the morning, we received the first alert about missile launches from Iran and immediately went into the safe room. Dana told me she was feeling a bit of wetness and pain, and I thought to myself – it’s okay, the siren will end, and we’ll head to the hospital.
At that moment, I realized we were in a totally different kind of situation. There was no way we’d make it to the hospital in time.
I immediately called MDA (Emergency Medical Services) and asked them to send an ambulance as quickly as possible. The dispatcher instructed me to lay towels on the bed, and Dana lay down on them. At a certain point, she told me the baby was already coming out – and I was a little bit panicking inside, thinking:
Keep in mind – throughout the whole birth, sirens were going off in the background, but I tried to stay calm and give Dana the feeling that everything was under control.
Dana:
Everything happened so fast that I was surprised by how quickly the birth progressed. Thankfully, everything went well – and Itay? He could totally work as a midwife.
When the MDA team arrived, the baby was already out. And in the crazy reality we’re living in, just a few minutes later another siren went off, and we all rushed back into the saferoom: me, having just given birth and holding the baby in my arms; Itay; my sister Yael, who had just arrived; six MDA staff members; and our two kids, still asleep in the room – thankfully undisturbed by the sirens… or the birth.
He didn’t quite understand what was going on around him and probably thought he was still dreaming.
In contrast, our eldest daughter just kept sleeping as if nothing had happened.
Dana and Itay:
When we were asked to give an interview about this unusual birth, we agreed – mainly because we wanted to bring a bit of light and make people smile during such a complex and difficult time in our country.
If we managed to make even one person smile – for us, that made it all worth it.”
